This MOOC discusses the concept of psychiatry, mood, and psychotic disorders and how to deal with them. The MOOC also discusses obsessive-compulsive disorder, hyperactivity, and lack of concentration, addiction, and dementia.

Syllabus

Unit 1: Introduction to understanding mental disorders and their treatment
In this unit, you will learn what are the characteristics of a psychologically correct person? How does the psychiatrist think to reach the diagnosis? How is the psychological evaluation done?

Module Two: Mood Disorders and Anxiety
In this unit, you will learn about the unipolar disorder (depression), bipolar disorder, generalized anxiety and anxiety disorders, panic disorder and aerophobia, social anxiety, and treatment for anxiety disorders.

The third unit: Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder
What is the definition of obsessive-compulsive disorder and how to treat it?

Module 4: Psychotic Disorders
What is psychosis, and how do we deal with it in the right way?

Edraak

Edraak, is a massive open online course (MOOC) platform, that is an initiative of the Queen Rania Foundation (QRF). QRF is determined to ensure that the Arab world is at the forefront of educational innovation. As such, QRF has capitalized on regional Arab talent to leverage technology developed by the Harvard-MIT consortium, edX, to create the first non-profit Arabic MOOC platform. The new MOOC platform will present the Arab world with unique and vital opportunities that can be part of a necessary revolution in education and learning.

First, the platform will broadcast the best Arab professors to the region, offering original Arabic courses – developed by QRF – to further enrich Arab education. Through its partnership with edX, the platform will also give Arab learners access in Arabic to courses taught and developed at top tier institutions like HarvardX, MITX, and UC BerkelyX. All courses are delivered at no cost to the learner.

Second, QRF envisions the use of the platform to showcase Arab role models by broadcasting short online courses by practitioners and professionals from a variety of fields spanning the arts and sciences.

Finally, QRF believes that the platform will enable the Arab world to take advantage of the international interest in regional affairs to tell its own story to the world. Arab university professors and regional experts can use the platform to give courses in English about the region and its history. This will serve to inform a global audience that is interested in the region’s development.

Instructors

Dr. Ahmed Mahmoud AlSalem

Dr. Ahmed Al-Salem joined the University of Science and Technology in Jordan. After graduation, he completed a one-year internship at the Jordanian Ministry of Health Hospitals. Resident for four years, to specialize in psychiatry, and during these years he passed the British Psychiatric Fellowship exam: Part I and Part III. After his residency, Dr. Ahmed Al-Salem worked for two years in the clinic of the psychiatric consultant Dr. Walid Sarhan, the representative of the World Association of Psychiatry in the Middle East. – Part two, in that period. Dr. Ahmed Al-Salem started his clinic at the Maria Den Braven Center – Jordan – Amman – Second Circle since 2016, till now. Dr. Ahmed Al-Salem works at the German organization Help – and has been treating patients at the organization’s clinic in Zarqa, twice a week, since 2017. Dr. Ahmed expanded his business and opened a second clinic in Jordan, Amman, Al-Garns Street (Wasfi Al-Tal), this year.
