National NGO Program on Humanitarian Leadership (NNPHL)

From conflicts to natural disasters, humanitarians are at the forefront of providing life-saving aid to populations in need. Negotiating access to these populations and ensuring that aid is delivered in a manner that respects humanitarian norms and international law is no easy task. This work requires strong leadership and strategic vision. Yet, few humanitarian professionals have access to leadership training programs.

That’s why Concern Worldwide U.S., in consortium with International Medical Corps (IMC) and the Harvard Humanitarian Initiative (HHI) developed the National NGO Program on Humanitarian Leadership (NNPHL). The program, funded by the Office of U.S. Foreign Disaster Assistance (OFDA), is committed to preparing the next generation of humanitarian leaders for today’s global challenges. Learn more about NNPHL.

What is the NNPHL Leadership Training?

NNPHL’s intensive leadership training program is a rigorous, innovative blended-learning leadership training for humanitarian professionals. The training is designed for exceptional humanitarian professionals working for non-governmental or community-based organizations in humanitarian settings. The ideal participant will aspire to take on decision-making and management responsibilities in the humanitarian sector.

By the end of this learning process, NNPHL participants will have the skills, knowledge, and confidence to take on leadership responsibilities within a variety of humanitarian organizations, ultimately improving the delivery of services to those in need of humanitarian assistance.

Since the program began in 2016, NNPHL has received more than 3,800 applications and trained 154 humanitarian professionals from more than 48 countries.

The National NGO Program on Humanitarian Leadership (NNPHL) is delighted to announce that we are now accepting applications for the NNPHL.9 Leadership Training Program, Africa. The deadline for applications is January 8, 2021.

Please note that due to COVID-19 restrictions, this cohort will be entirely remote.

For the NNPHL.9 Leadership Training course, NNPHL will prioritize applications from exemplary, mid-level career humanitarian professionals working for non-governmental or community-based organizations in humanitarian settings in Africa. NNPHL will prioritize humanitarians working for national NGOs and community-based organizations.

NNPHL Leadership Training is designed for exemplary, mid-level career, full-time humanitarian professionals working for non-governmental or community-based organizations in humanitarian settings.

All participants of NNPHL will meet a standard set of minimum requirements:

• Must have reached a mid-level position in a non-governmental or community-based organization
• Professional experience in at least one or more humanitarian emergency situations
• Must be able to demonstrate management experience (i.e., managing a team)
• Must have a demonstrated interest in pursuing leadership roles in the humanitarian sector
• Must be able to speak, read, and write English with proficiency
• Must have a Bachelor’s degree or a comparable academic or professional qualification
• Must be available to participate the course (including the remote training, distance learning and experiential learning highlighted above)
• Must have the permission of your employer to participate in all aspects of the program

Please note that expatriate staff are not eligible for NNPHL blended learning courses, nor are professionals working at UN agencies or government affiliated organizations. However, all are welcome to register for the NNPHL Online Course, which is available to everyone at no cost.

ARE THERE OTHER SELECTION CRITERIA?

• With a focus on strengthening the leadership capacity of national level staff, NNPHL will prioritize candidates working with national NGOs and community-based organizations. A limited number of spots will be available for national staff working at international NGOs.
• For each regional workshop, NNPHL will only accept applicants from the corresponding region. Please read the Eligibility Requirements above and ensure that you meet the criteria before applying.
• Please note that expatriate staff are not eligible for NNPHL blended learning courses, nor are professionals working at UN agencies or government affiliated organizations. However, the NNPHL Online Course is available to everyone at no cost.
• NNPHL has a commitment to maintaining a gender balance for each iteration of the course and ensuring that women have improved access to leadership training. For that reason, we especially encourage women humanitarian professionals to apply for the program. For more information about NNPHL’s eligibility requirements.

How to register

Applications are due January 8, 2021.

The online application does not allow you to save your work and return to the application at a later time. Partial applications will not be considered so make sure to answer every question. We recommend that you copy the short-answer essay questions below and save them on a Word document. When you are ready to submit your application, copy and paste your answers to the online application. We can only accept applications submitted online through Recruiterbox.

Two supporting documents are required and must be submitted at the time of application: 1) a one to two page resume or CV, and 2) a letter of reference from your current or most recent manager highlighting your suitability to participate in NNPHL.
